Tuscan Dreams

Fire in Tuscany

Watercolor 18" x 30"

A week in Volterra, Italy, led me to ponder on the life of the Etruscans and the poetry of Dante Allegreti. Etruscan art  is rich in marking, symbolism and abstraction. I   have included photos of some of the art work exhibited in the Guanarchi Etruscan Museum which inspired me to begin this series.

The fertile landscape that I was immersed in was walked by Dante who experiences the steam escaping from the cracks in the earth, (now used to power geothermal energy),  which is said to inspire his vision of the Inferno in the Divine Comedy. He writes:

Now lies[454] our way along one of the margins hard;
Steam rising from the rivulet forms a cloud,
Which 'gainst the fire doth brook and borders guard.
